The Importance of a Second Radiology Opinion

A picture paints a thousand words…..

Unfortunately, this has never been truer than in the world of Radiology. You have a picture of a spine, a knee, a brain…. and the words a Radiologist chooses to describe that picture either help clarify the problem, confuse it, or worse….

We trust physicians to get it right, but not all do. Besides missing pathology, sometimes a report may find the pathology but mischaracterize it. Some radiologists fail to take in the clinical context of what they are observing.

For example, there are myriad words to describe spinal disc pathology. Finding the precise language to describe the images is both an art and a science. Do you know where your patient went for their imaging? Do you know how careful and aware the radiologist was? Is he or she a "lumper' - one who lazily sums up findings as "chronic" or "degenerative"? Is he or she a "hedger" - one who can't commit to a definitive diagnosis? Is the radiologist simply unskilled in differentiating between traumatic and non-traumatic disease?

Don't assume that the MRI report is accurate, make sure that it is!
